Inspired by the example of the African Futurist Greenhouse, Detroit middle school teacher Calvin Nellum asked us to work with his students to create mini versions, "biodomes" for his environmental science classroom. That included lessons on Indigenous knowledge of homeostasis, as well as electronics for sensor-actuator feedback loops and other STEM and culture interrelationships. Pre/post contrast (N=38) showed a positive increase in STEM interest and self-efficacy, albeit less than needed for statistically significant). One challege was simply fitting all those containers into the room! Building custom bookshelving was the first step.
